This could possibly create redundant-looking rankings (not to mention data):

Best video games of all time:

  1. Skyrim (PC)
  2. Skyrim (PlayStation)
  3. Skyrim (Xbox)
  4. Fallout 4 (PC)
  5. Fallout 4 (PlayStation)
  6. Fallout 4 (Xbox), etc.
So I'm definitely not for it. However, as I mentioned here, it's possible to solve this using our ranking system. This would require all rating areas (PC game, Xbox game, etc.) to be on one page, so it would reduce redundant data as well. If we go for this idea, it's the way to go. Here's a better explanation of how it would look like; we would have to use the group best ranking (opi.wiki/help/ranking#b). In practice:

Tetris: 8 as PC game, 6 as PS game, 4 as Xbox game

The group best ranking (video games in our example) takes the best rating only. So, in the video games ranking Tetris would go with 8. It would also be possible to use the group average ranking (that would've given Tetris a 6), but I think taking the best rating is a better idea.

Having said that, I'm not sure about this idea in general. I'll give it a thought and cast my vote later.

Now, games that are remastered/enhanced/etc. should definitely be added as separate items. If they're named the same, the remastered edition should have an additional info set (e.g. (remastered edition)). Not as the name info, but as a part of the title.

Update: After giving this structure a consideration, I think the idea is good. It seems that we all agree, and as X said, there's nothing to wait for. Some changes will be required, but they shouldn't be drastic. I also need to write a new function that will help us to handle the changes. When it's done, I'll let you know via PM and we'll start.

User voted Yes, each port should have its own page/item.

Alright, when you are ready, tell me all the details and I'll work on giving OpiWiki a solid video game database. :P

Ok, thinking about it a little longer, it's not that simple. First, what's for sure:

1. Rating games separately under each platform is useful and this option will be there.
2. It will be possible on a single item page. Allowing 1 game to have multiple representatives in the best video games of all time ranking would be unfair and it would add redundant-looking data to the rank.

So far, so good. "best (...) games on [platform]" rankings will be beautiful and 100% accurate. The only issue left is the best video games of all time ranking (all platforms).

Tetris: 8 as PC game, 6 as PS game, 4 as Xbox game

Option best: Tetris is ranked 8 in the ranking
Option average: Tetris is ranked 6 in the ranking

Option best seemed to be better, but there's a downside – it makes the opinions of some of the users irrelevant. In our example, users who played Tetris on PS or Xbox + not on PC are excluded. It seems unfair and that's why we'll go with the average option.

Is option average perfect? No. For example, if Skyrim is in fact much worse under PS, I don't think it will be 100% fair to give it the average rating. On the other hand, we didn't push the developers to publish Skyrim on PS under the same brand name.

Still, we will have the best rankings (in terms of a system) around the net, so it's not that bad. In the future we will be seeking perfection by improving the system just for this complex issue. The solution is already in my mind, but it will require some work and that's in some time to come.

I'll send you a PM soon (today hopefully).

This is a great idea, to simply list different rankings for different ports, but not create different pages. Seconded.
