Do you think that forbid certains words, expression ways or other things is good? Personnaly not, I create this topic because a certain site (auto-censoring) said me "not vulgarities on this site!" when I desired to post an opinion where there were a vulgarity in, that I can't quote here (that's censorship!). I think that messages and comprehenssion between peoples can be really better when all words and expressions ways can be used : if I say "I'm angry!", the sentence havn't the same signification that if I say : "I'm ******* angry!", and that can be more serious misunderstandings with not every tools of comprehension. I think some peoples will say something with kids, I don't think it's a problem, when a kid discever the life, he is restrained by the rules and the conventions, if he can discover vulgarities early, he will not use them too much, if he discover it late, he will be "impressed" by the new thing he learned, like me when I have a new video game, I piss everybody with that, but my BMX that I have for a long time ago, it's good. Now let me your thinking way and your opinion and pliz Netik don't censor me ^^"

So far, I've not found this to be a problem. I typed a vulgarity on here once and was told I could not use it. I used another word instead that served my purpose just fine. Instead of using a vulgar adjective, why not simply say, "I'm enraged!" That carries the same weight as what you tried to say before, doesn't it?

I share your concerns about censorship, particularly when words are banned regardless of context. I remember in the days of the old MSN chat rooms, I was telling people about a contest for Iowa state license plate slogans. One of the entrants had submitted the slogan, "Iowa: Guilt without Sex." I was censored and warned for using the word "sex," even though it was preceded by the word "without." I was told that people on the forum could be as young as thirteen. I found this ironic because I'd learned nearly all the vulgarities I would ever learn by the time I was thirteen, and I learned them from other twelve and thirteen-year-olds.

That having been said, I've seen people manage to sneak vulgarities past the censor on various forums, and it was usually to hurl insults, like a certain "c" word, or to drop the F bomb into sentences as the person's one and only adjective. I think we can elevate the debate to the ideas level instead of people resorting to abuse and personal attacks if we do our best to stay away from vulgarities. It's also important to avoid policing the entire language, especially if it's done without context. It may be useful to discuss if people find a certain word offensive, for example, or why they find it offensive. The list of words that are deemed offensive on college campuses seems to be growing, and there's certainly a valuable discussion to be had about that.

I think the key is to be respectful of others in this forum. Free speech does sometimes necessitate offending others, but we don't need to offend for offense's sake.

First, to point it out, this opinion has been transferred from this topic.

To reply, OpiWiki is currently in a hiatus mode - I'm finishing writing a great amount of new features and updates. Once OpiWiki is back (~2 months), we'll discuss this topic in detail with our users. For now, I'll just say, although you currently cannot use vulgarisms in the unfiltered form on the site, you can use the asterisks form. "I'm ******* angry!" would be ok.
